Favourite albums of the year so far

6 months of 2013 down and here are my favourite albums of the year so far. There are probably more that I will add later in year but I’ve not sat down and listened to a few albums properly yet for one reason or another, notably, Sigur Ros, Editors, My Bloody Valentine, British Sea Power, James Blake, Phoenix, James Grant, Camera Obscura & Boards Of Canada. Plus there are a few others I’ve heard in passing that sound promising. Jay-Z’s new album will almost certainly find its way in to my albums of the year when I hear it.

So here, in no particular order, are my picks.
Would love folk to leave recommendations in the comments

Steve Mason – Monkey Minds In The Devil’s Time
This is the best thing he’s done since The Beta Band’s 3 EPs. It’s just great songs with a great sound all the way through. Favourite track: A Lot Of Love

The National – Trouble Will Find Me
My favourite band. I never had any doubt they would produce another great album. Not quite as punchy as High Violet but just as good. Favourite track: Sea Of Love

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Push The Sky Away
My hero. He’s never made a bad album – only great albums & slightly less great albums. I’ve not decided where this one sits but certainly Jubilee Street is one of my favourite songs he has ever recorded. Favourite Track: Jubilee Street

Foals – Holy Fire
I’ve grown to love this band after really not being too fussed with their first album. This however follows on from their magnificent second album, Total Life Forever. Their songs are just really tight and infectious. Favourite track: Inhaler

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mosquito
Quite simply they haven’t made a bad album. Karen O is a goddess, Nick Zinner plays his guitar like a chainsaw & the other guy plays some drums. Love Karen O’s Flying Burrito Brothers suits too. Favourite Track: Slave

Daft Punk – Random Access Memories
Much hyped. Preceded by the biggest song of the year. The album is certainly not what fans of Get Lucky might have expected – not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing. I love it though. I think it’s their most layered & interesting album. Favourite track: Too easy to pick Get Lucky so I’ll say Contact

Primal Scream – More Light
Loved them for years. Screamadelica is my favourite album of all time. This is without doubt their best album since XTRMNTR. I think touring the Screamadelica album has sone good things for them & revitalised them. Favourite track: Relativity

David Bowie – The Next Day
As good an album as any Bowie had a right to expect. I gave it a rest for a while as I was concerned that maybe the hype and excitement around it might have affected my judgement but listened again over the weekend – I really love it. Favourite Track: (You Will) Set The World On Fire
